More information about Counselling/Psychotherapy.
Research suggests that one in four people at one time in their life will suffer with mental health issues. Most people say they don't know where to go to get help. We learn also that men in particular are more likely to present to their GP with physical complaints , where as women are said to present more with emotional difficulties, but both experiencing distress.
Counselling and Psychotherapy are proven to be effective in enabling individuals to work through such issues relating to distress.
There are many different types of psychotherapy available, some therapists work in more structured ways than others. Counselling is usually more informal in its approach .It is important to understand more about your chosen counsellor's approach and way of working to allow you to decide how best to proceed with getting your personal needs met.
Trained counsellors should be registered with the British association for counsellors and psychotherapists (B.A.C.P.), or other recognised body . Some counsellors will be accredited or working towards accreditation. However some counsellors would have completed an accredited/ approved training .
Reasons why people seek counselling.
People seek psychological therapy /counselling for a variety of reasons, some whilst in crisis, others after a crisis/difficult life event has occurred.
Short term and long term counselling
For some individuals short term work may be more appropriate, 6-12 sessions would be classed as a short term/time limited counselling episode of treatment.
Due to the nature of short term counselling the presenting issues would be the main focus ie managing conflict at work, becoming more assertive or working through a relationship breakup etc..this approach may suit that particular individual and enable them to get on with their life thereafter .Some individuals may benefit from two or more episodes of therapy as different life events occur.
Another counselling option would be open ended therapy; individuals may attend for up to a year or for many years. In the world of therapy, long term attendance is not considered to be unusual.
Generally compared to short term therapy long term work is less focused and would look at a wider range of encompassing difficulties or patterns of relating over the person's life time so far .The therapist would encourage exploration about past relationships and experiences that would be relevant to the client's current circumstances. This process involves working with unconscious conflicting feelings through establishing a trusting /therapeutic relationship with the therapist.
It is usual for the client to begin to notice subtle changes with their feelings or behaviour within current relationships whilst in therapy. Hence why the long term option takes time to be most effective.
